10 Tips to Enjoy This 4th of July

The 4th of July is a patriotic celebration filled with parades, barbecues, and, of course, fireworks! While the holiday can be enjoyable, it also comes with challenges and safety concerns. Here are 10 tips to help you make the most of your Independence Day while keeping everyone safe and happy, including your furry friends.

1. Plan Ahead

Planning is crucial for a smooth celebration. Map out your day, whether you’re attending a parade, hosting a barbecue, or heading to a fireworks show.  Knowing your schedule helps you manage time effectively and ensures you don’t miss any events.

2. Stay Hydrated

July can be scorching! Make sure to have plenty of water on hand for you and your guests. Keeping everyone hydrated can prevent heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

3. Sun Protection

Whether you’re at the beach, the park, or your backyard, make sure to use sunscreen and wear hats and sunglasses. Take breaks in the shade to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.

4. Keep In Mind that Personal Fireworks Are Not Permitted

Due to Placer County’s vulnerability to damaging wildfires, the Board of Supervisors adopted an ordinance prohibiting fireworks of all types, including those ‘safe and sane’ fireworks intended for home use that are sold at roadside stands throughout the region.

The fireworks prohibition applies to the following:

Rural areas not located within the boundaries of Roseville, Rocklin and Lincoln.
The town of Loomis and the City of Auburn.
Unincorporated communities such as Penryn, Newcastle, North Auburn, Granite Bay, Meadow Vista, Foresthill, Tahoe City and Kings Beach.
Anyone caught violating the fireworks ban could be charged with a misdemeanor and face a fine of up to $2,000 per violation. Learn More

5. Keep Your Dogs Safe During Fireworks

Fireworks can be terrifying for dogs, leading to anxiety and panic. Create a quiet and safe space inside your home, away from windows and exterior walls. Use background noise like a TV or a white-noise machine to help muffle the sound of fireworks. Additionally, some pet owners find that anxiety wraps or calming supplements help keep their pets calm.

6. Grill Safely

BBQs are a staple of 4th of July celebrations. Make sure your grill is set up in a well-ventilated area, away from any flammable materials. Never leave the grill unattended, and keep children and pets at a safe distance.

7. Opt for Eco-Friendly Decorations

Patriotism can also be eco-friendly! Use reusable or biodegradable decorations. Not only will you be celebrating America’s birthday, but you’ll also be doing your part to protect the environment.

8. Respect Local Guidelines

Always respect local regulations. This ensures everyone’s safety and allows public events to continue in a controlled manner. Keep in mind that alcohol is banned on the Truckee River from July 1-6.

9. Safe Swimming Practices

If your 4th of July plans include swimming, make sure to use life jackets and keep a close eye on children at all times. Knowing basic water rescue techniques can make a big difference in case of an emergency.

10. Capture the Moments

Finally, don’t forget to capture your memories! Take plenty of pictures to remember the fun and share them with friends and family who may not be able to join in person. Be sure to live in the moment, though; sometimes the best memories are those experienced firsthand rather than through the lens of a camera.

Happy 4th of July!
