Encouraging Respect and Safety with Creative Messaging

When you’re exploring the beautiful multi-use paved trails in the Tahoe Basin and Truckee, keep an eye out for some creatively stenciled messages. These messages are more than just words on the pavement; they’re part of a larger initiative aimed at promoting trail etiquette and enhancing the experience for everyone.

A Successful Pilot Program

Last summer, the Take Care Tahoe initiative tested these trail etiquette messages on the Legacy Trail in Truckee and the Pope-Baldwin Trail in South Lake Tahoe. The results were encouraging. The playful yet pointed reminders like “share the path” and “keep right, pass left,” as well as the more whimsical “we put a man on the moon, surely we can share this trail,” caught the attention of both locals and visitors alike. Importantly, the messages are stenciled in both English and Spanish to reach a broader audience.

Expanding the Effort

Following the successful pilot, Nettie Pardue, managing director of the Lake Tahoe Destination Stewardship Council, announced the expansion of the program. “The messaging was fun and effective, and we’re excited to roll it out more broadly this summer. Our goal is to continue to educate residents and visitors about the behaviors we want to see so that everyone has a good experience,” said Pardue.

Tackling Common Trail Issues

The initiative targets common trail etiquette issues, such as large groups blocking the entire trail by walking side-by-side and bikers speeding past pedestrians. By addressing these problems, the program aims to create a more enjoyable and safer environment for all trail users.

Collaboration and Community Involvement

The expanded program is being led by the Stewardship Action Team, convened by the Lake Tahoe Destination Stewardship Council. This summer, you’ll find these friendly reminders on multi-use paved trails managed by the North Tahoe Public Utilities District, South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe City Public Utilities District, Town of Truckee, and Washoe County.

Implementation of the Lake Tahoe Destination Stewardship Plan is a collaborative effort involving over 20 regional organizations. This award-winning plan reflects the input of over 3,000 residents, visitors, and businesses, establishing a shared vision for the region’s outdoor recreation and tourism. It encourages everyone to help take care of Tahoe’s cherished communities and environment.
