What is a Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP)?

A Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) serves as a collaboratively developed document aimed at identifying local solutions for wildland fire management. This critical plan prioritizes and addresses several key areas:

  • Hazardous Fuels Reduction Treatments: It identifies and prioritizes areas for reducing fuels that could ignite and sustain wildfires.
  • Community Preparedness: The plan outlines actions and strategies to enhance community readiness against wildfire threats.
  • Reducing Structure Ignitability: Comprehensive recommendations are provided to homeowners and communities to minimize the risk of structures catching fire.

In essence, the CWPP allows communities to prioritize the protection of vital places and resources, ensuring that what the community values most remains safeguarded.

Find Your CWPP Forecast Zone

Nevada County, with its diverse range of elevations from 1,000 to over 7,000 feet above sea level, is divided into four distinct forecast zones. These zones consider fire environments and community identities, helping residents understand specific fire hazards in their locale and identify risk reduction opportunities that are unique to their communities. CWPP Community Meetings and Education

The Nevada County Office of Emergency Services (OES) has made significant strides to foster community engagement and education regarding the CWPP through a series of Community Risk Reduction Workshops and Lunch & Learns hosts by forecast zones.

CWPP Lunch & Learns by Forecast Zone

By hosting these informative sessions, the Nevada County OES aims to kick-start the CWPP update planning process, offering a platform to learn how these plans assess wildfire hazards, identify risks, and prioritize areas for multi-benefit wildfire risk reduction actions. They emphasize the importance of CWPP as part of Nevada County’s Roadmap to Resilience, serving as a crucial tool for prioritizing wildfire mitigation from Higgins Corner to Truckee.

Community Risk Reduction Workshops and Virtual Office Hours

To further support the CWPP’s development, the Nevada County OES hosted nine Community Risk Reduction Workshops. For those who were unable to attend, recordings of the workshop presentations—including Spanish captions—are available. Additionally, the OES offered a specialized Virtual Office Hours series, delving into the Wildfire Risk Assessment developed to support the CWPP. These videos are accessible by clicking on the provided graphics.

CWPP Timeline and Community Toolkit

Looking ahead, the draft CWPP is slated for release by mid to late 2024, at which point community feedback will be actively sought. The Nevada County OES will post the draft on their platform once it is ready. Residents are encouraged to stay tuned and actively participate in shaping this essential document.
