Wildfire-Related Power Outages

With wildfires becoming increasingly common in our region, Truckee Donner Public Utility District (TDPUD) is urging residents and visitors to be prepared for the likelihood of extended power outages during this wildfire season. Recent events like the Pass Fire in Truckee and the wildfire safety power outage triggered by the Gold Ranch Fire in Verdi underscore the importance of readiness. TDPUD and NV Energy, its primary energy transmission supplier, are implementing several preventive actions to mitigate wildfire risks—actions that may result in power outages lasting several days.

NV Energy’s PSOM & Emergency De-Energization Programs

Public Safety Outage Management (PSOM)

In a PSOM event, NV Energy will deactivate transmission lines supplying power to Truckee and the greater Truckee-North Tahoe region during periods of extreme weather and heightened fire risk. TDPUD aims to notify the public 48-24 hours in advance, followed by additional updates 12-4 hours before a potential outage.

Emergency De-Energization

In emergencies, such as an active wildfire nearing NV Energy’s equipment, power will be shut off to protect first responders and prevent additional fire risks. Depending on how fast the fire spreads, these outages may occur with little to no warning. While TDPUD will strive to notify the public as soon as possible, rapid conditions may preclude timely alerts.

Both types of outages will likely affect all TDPUD customers, lasting anywhere from one to several days. The duration will depend on the severity of wildfire danger and the time needed for thorough inspections of the electrical systems by NV Energy and TDPUD.

For more details on these programs, visit NV Energy’s wildfire safety page, and for impacts specifically on TDPUD customers, go to TDPUD’s PSOM page and TDPUD’s wildfire page.

TDPUD Partners with TDRPD for Outage Center

In collaboration with the Truckee-Donner Recreation and Park District (TDRPD), TDPUD will establish an outage center at the Community Arts Center (10046 Church St.) during extended wildfire safety power outages. The center will offer device charging and information updates from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

While public utilities are not mandated to provide services during such outages, TDPUD is committed to supporting the community. Should additional services be necessary, TDPUD will coordinate with town and county agencies to address unmet needs. For more details on the outage center, visit TDPUD’s wildfire page.

Staying Informed

Effective communication with customers and visitors is pivotal during outages. TDPUD encourages everyone to:

  • Update contact information and sign up for automated alerts: Visit TDPUD’s My Account page
  • Receive text alerts: Check out the instructions at TDPUD’s outage page
  • Call for assistance: 530-587-3896
  • Non-account holders: Text TDPUD to 333111 to enroll in Nixle emergency alerts

“We need to be able to communicate with our customer base and the larger community in the event of a wildfire safety outage; being informed and prepared are critical pieces to keeping our community safe during wildfire season,” noted Brian Wright, TDPUD general manager, “We are asking our customers to take a moment to make sure they are enrolled in our outage alert system with their correct contact information. A few minutes now will make all the difference when it’s needed most.”

Proactive Measures Against Wildfire Risks

TDPUD is committed to reducing the risk of its electric equipment sparking wildfires by:
