Just when things were warming up after a mild winter, something remarkable happened. Tahoe’s snowpack doubled since February 1st. According to the NRCS Snotel, the snowpack is currently at 96% of the median to date after the most recent storm. This means that Tahoe is now on track for an above-average winter, with more snowfall than usual. (Source)

Storm Buries Sierra Nevada

Last weekend’s epic storm shut down freeways, ski resorts and Yosemite National Park. More than 10 feet of snow dropped around Lake Tahoe over the weekend. The San Francisco Standard posted a montage of photos from Truckee locals digging out. They are too good not to share:

What It Means

The increase in the snowpack is great news for ski resorts in the area, as more snow means better conditions for skiing and snowboarding. It also means more water in the lake come spring and summer, which is vital for the local ecosystem and the many species that call Lake Tahoe home.

So whether you’re a seasoned skier looking for fresh powder or just someone who loves to admire the beauty of a winter wonderland, Lake Tahoe is the place to be this season. With its doubled snowpack and the promise of an above-average winter, there’s no better time to be here.
